Information to parents about the 2010-2011 strategic plan, The Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board is proud to be launching a newly adopted strategic plan for the 2010-2011 school year. All school boards have undertaken this process and are entering into partnership agreements with the Minister of Education. This plan is in place for one year and will be revised in 2011, when our original strategic plan was scheduled to end. The 2010-2011 strategic plan complies with the MELS new goals. Our first goal, LITERACY and fluency in English and French Second Language, focus on making sure that all of our students are supported in the development of their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in both languages in order to enhance their learning at all levels. The SWLSB has had and continues to place a strong emphasis on learning to read, reading to learn and finally reading to succeed. Our second goal, DIVERSITY comprises two important Ministry objectives of support for special needs students or targeted groups, and the promotion of a variety of opportunities for our students in alternative career paths- with an emphasis on vocational education. Having a diversity of instructional models, special concentration and enrichment programs and developing innovative teaching and pedagogical approaches are all important for special needs students to achieve success. Understanding that there are many different and exciting career options available in life, and giving our students exposure to these, helps them in understanding themselves better and promotes positive self-esteem, which in turn, supports success in our society. Our third goal, HARMONY, aims to provide all students and employees with safe, healthy and active environments in which to develop their potential. Healthy lifestyle habits, physical activity and school safety are important in order for every member of the school and school board community to thrive and learn in an atmosphere conducive to success. Our fourth goal is to increase the number of students who attain certification and or qualification before the age of 20 years. We will do this through a focus on PARTICIPATION together to improve the success rates and marks attained by our students in the core subjects of mathematics, history/social studies and the sciences both at elementary and secondary levels. This is a source of motivation as students become more actively involved in goal setting and planning their sense of ownership and pride grows and this in turn improves success results. We believe as a learning community that everyone is capable of greatness and that by learning and growing together, possibilities can and will turn into reality. The 2010-2011 strategic plan and our school success plans will be our guides through this wonderful journey. Yours sincerely, Steve Bletas, Chairman Anne-Marie Lepage, Director General |
